Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP and candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, spoke candidly about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) growing presence in the region, acknowledging their ascent as a formidable force in the Lok Sabha seat. In an interview with news agency ANI, Tharoor noted that in recent elections, the BJP had consistently secured the second position in his constituency.

He remarked, “It’s not surprising that they have turned out to be a strong player. The Communist campaign has been lacklustre…whereas the BJP has moved into the second position in this constituency.”

Tharoor also expressed his belief that the BJP might surpass the Communists in the upcoming elections. He emphasized the significance of Thiruvananthapuram as the BJP’s strongest seat in Kerala and acknowledged their vigorous campaign efforts. Despite this, Tharoor asserted that the Congress was equally determined and confident in their campaign strategy.

Regarding the BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Tharoor highlighted a “real perception battle” due to discrepancies in his affidavit. Tharoor alleged that Chandrasekhar, a billionaire, paid less tax than taxi drivers, which could potentially impact his image among voters in Kerala. The Congress had raised concerns with the Election Commission regarding the mismatch between Chandrasekhar’s declared assets and his actual income.

Chandrasekhar, in response, defended his income sources, attributing reduced taxable income in certain years to partnership losses during the Covid period.

Tharoor also criticized the BJP’s track record in Kerala, citing broken promises such as the failure to deliver on commitments for AIIMS, National University of Ayurveda, and National University of Disability Studies. He quipped, “Modi ki guarantee hai that whatever promises they make in Kerala they will break.”

Tharoor’s remarks offer insights into the electoral dynamics in Thiruvananthapuram and Kerala, highlighting the fierce competition between political parties and the issues shaping voter perceptions in the region.
